Esta ilustración pertenece a un proyecto con Mark Andrew Smith que está por ahora en pausa. Es también un modesto guiño a los grabados de Kuniyoshi (no os perdáis la increíble exposición que hay en el Mori Art Centre hasta el 12 de febrero).

Por cierto, este martes 31 estaré detrás de un stand en el 4th Film Networking Event en Tokio: si te acercas a decir hola, además de ver mis nuevas gafas, podrás llevarte una bonita postal.

Y entre tanto, sigo trabajando en "Spicy Tuna", espero poder enseñar algo en breve por aquí!

I've just seen in my area's stores that Christmas starts in November, that is, right now. So as not to be left far behind, I've prepared the greeting card for what will be the chinese year of the dragon.

You can get the original drawing (below) by collaborating with the Hafu project. It's team has launched a campaign to raise funds to finish this documentary on the mixed-race japanese (to whom we owe so many great personalities, isn't it?). You're still on time to collaborate or at least spread the word!

Veo en las tiendas de mi barrio que las Navidades comienzan en Noviembre, o sea, ya mismo. Para no quedarme atrás, he preparado ya mi felicitación para el que será según el calendario chino el año del dragón.

Puedes hacerte con el dibujo original (que tienes aquí abajo) colaborando con el proyecto Hafu. Su equipo ha lanzado una campaña para poder completar este documental que habla de los medio-japoneses (esa raza que tantas grandes personalidades le ha dado al mundo, he oído decir). Aún estás a tiempo de contribuír y difundir la noticia.

Although I'll put the final version of the illustration in this blog when the time comes (unlike my neighbourhood's stores), those of you who can't wait have the chance to get a physical copy of it at home (!).

I've done a limited print run of postcards that I'll put on the mail on December 15th, at a price of 3 USD / 3 Euros / 300 yen each. Just send me an e-mail telling me the number of copies you want, the adress where to send them and I'll write you back with the payment details. So as not to feel to selfish, it's ok if you want to order one to be sent to someone else.

Forget me not | No te olvides

"Historias del Olvido" (Stories of Oblivion) is an ambitious project set in a universe somewhere between fantasy and reality, written by Javier de Isusi and Luciano Saracino. A first volume of short stories came out some years ago, thanks to some of the finest young spanish artists (I obviously wasn't there).

Hopefully, it's time to redeem! Today its second installment, HO2 has come out. It contains a self-conclusive story set in the same universe, drawn by the fenomenal Sebastián Barreiro and Sergio Kechu.

I've contributed with 9 pages that will be inserted in the main storyline, 3 of which you can see above.

"Arrugas", the acclaimed comic by Paco Roca has become the very first spanish graphic novel to be published in Japan. This month's issue of japanese magazine "Ikki" features an article by Kosei Ono reviewing it, with a black and white version of the illustration above. Congratulations to Paco, I hope the book gets the feedback from the japanese readers it deserves!

"The incredible adventures of Supercarlos" is a short story I did back in 2008 for one of my favourite magazines on earth, the italian "Black". It was a work I enjoyed a lot, done at the same time as "I Kill Giants", but on a more humorous vein. And it's also Penguin's very first appearance, that became since then one of my pet characters.

It'd be not long after that it was published in the portuguese fanzine "Venham +5", although it hasn't been until now that the spanish version's out. It was featured in the "Superniños" fanzine, released during the Viñetas do Atlantico convention, along with short stories by David Rubín and Pedro Villarejo, the whole coordinated by Kike Benlloch. You can now order your copy before the 30th of august, for barely 1€!

"Las increíbles aventuras de Supercarlos" es una historia corta que hice en el 2008 para una de mis revistas preferidas, la italiana "Black". Fue un encargo que disfruté mucho, que realicé a la vez que "Soy una matagigantes", pero en un registro más humorístico. Y es también la primera aparición de Penguin, mi personaje fetiche.

Poco después se publicaría también en el fanzine portugués "Venham + 5", aunque no ha sido hasta ahora que ha tenido versión en español. Salió para el Viñetas do Atlántico en el fanzine "Superñiños", donde Supercarlos está acompañado de sendas historias de David Rubín y Pedro Villarejo, todo ello coordinado por Kike Benlloch. Podéis conseguirlo ahora haciendo un pedido por correo hasta el 30 de Agosto, por apenas 1€.

…And my 2011 Hidden Mobile Home World Tour has come to an end! The walking teapot has survived to the experience and is ready to take some rest somewhere in the seaside.

5 countries visited in the same number of months, a tiring schedule that has been worth for all the people I’ve met during the conventions and all I’ve learnt in the workshops. Thanks a lot to all those who have helped, accommodated and fed me these months, I’m a level higher thanks to you!

4 days of intensive work in the latest workshop in the MCJP in Paris, answering all of the questions from the pupils. As well as in Casa Asia Madrid’s workshop, there’s nothing better to update my thoughts.

3 months and different collections separate the original US edition of these two short stories, that have been gracefully reunited in the Spanish edition of “The amazing Spiderman” #57, available this very month in stores. What a pleasure to share pages with the amazing Pepe Larraz!

2 nominations in the Harvey Awards (Best Anthology and Best Single Issue or Story) for the 4th issue of “Popgun”, where I collaborated with “Chasing the goldfish”. Congratulations to D.J. Kirkbride and Joe Keatinge for all of their hard work!

1 page of my most recent work, that you’ll be able to read soon.

Now the question is what to do with all of the miles cumulated?

…y la gira mundial 2011 ha llegado a su fin! La tetera andante ha sobrevivido a la experiencia y está lista para descansar frente al mar.

5 países recorridos en sendos meses, una paliza que ha merecido la pena aunque solo sea por toda la gente con la que me he encontrado en las ferias y todo lo que he aprendido en los talleres de cómic. Muchas gracias a todos los que me habéis ayudado, alojado y alimentado en estos meses, he subido de nivel gracias a vosotros!

4 días estuvimos trabajando de manera intensiva en el último taller que di en la MCJP en París. Al igual que en el taller en Casa Asia Madrid, nada como enfrentarse a preguntas constantes por parte de los alumnos para poner al día mis ideas.

3 meses de diferencia y cabeceras diferentes separan la publicación original en Estados Unidos a las dos historias, que por azares del destino, están reunidas en la edición española de “Asombroso Spiderman” #57 que tenéis este mismo mes en las tiendas. Un placer volver a compartir publicación con el asombroso Pepe Larraz.

2 nominaciones a los premios Harvey se ha llevado el número 4 de la revista “Popgun”, en la que participé con la historia “Chasing the goldfish”. ¡Enhorabuena a D.J. Kirkbride y Joe Keatinge por todos sus esfuerzos!

Ahora la cuestión es qué hacer con todos estos puntos de viaje acumulados...

And here we are in the last stop of our beloved World Tour: Paris, the city of lights! This time I'll be in the MCJP to teach an intensive workshop devoted to illustrations, from the 5th to the 9th of july.
We'll count with the sponsorship of Actua BD, Kana and Tonkam, as well as Letraset, whose tools we'll be able to use during our workshop. Not only that but the artists Liaze and Moemai will also be there, to speak about their work.
Can't wait to be there!

[HMHWT 2011] Casa Asia Madrid

And after coming back from Japan, the World Tour takes me back to my starting point: Madrid.

To begin with, I’ll be on thursday 16th june from 4 to 6 pm in the Esdip Academy for a masterclass. I'll do my best not to make people sleep out of boredom.

On top of that, the workshop “Manga: a creative process” starts next week in Casa Asia. We'll speak about the complete creative proces of a comic, task that I won’t undertake alone, as we’ll count with the presence of the illustrous Marc Bernabé. We'll also count with the sponsorship of Dibbuks, Dolmen Editorial, L’atélier Canson, Norma Editorial, Planeta de Agostini Comics and Ponent Mon.

It’ll be a total of 15 hours between the 20th and the 30th of june. The places are limited, so be quick to register.

Hope to see you there, among comics, pencils and some sweet horchata.

Y después de volver de Japón, la gira mundial me trae de vuelta a la casilla de inicio: Madrid.

Para empezar, el jueves 16 de junio, estaré de 16 a 18 horas en la Escuela Esdip de Madrid para dar una pequeña masterclass. Haré todo lo posible para no dormir al personal.

Además, la semana que viene comienza en Casa Asia el curso “Manga: procesos creativos”. Hablaremos sobre el proceso de creación completo de un cómic, tarea en la que me ayudará con su inestimable presencia Marc Bernabé. Y además contamos con la colaboración de Dibbuks, Dolmen Editorial, L’atélier Canson, Norma Editorial, Planeta de Agostini Comics y Ponent Mon.

A postcard from Tokyo | Una postal desde Tokio

The illustration “Ganbare nihon” has been travelling a lot recently, hopefully for a very good cause. It's been shown in the Barcelona Comic Convention, as well as in Madrid's Manga Convention. And after having sold the original art through the TBO4Japan project, it's going to be published in the compilation that Dibbuks will be putting out soon, not to mention Cafe Sale's Magnitude 9 book in France and the japanese magazine Destination Tokyo. I'm hoping that it's helping to make people happier!

However, for all those who would like to have a copy and keep helping, what could make more sense than receiving a postcard with the illustration... from Japan? Write me until the 11th of june to know the details (out of the 2 Euros that it'll cost, half will be directly donated to the Japanese Red Cross). Anyone feeling like doing a good action today?

La ilustración “Ganbare nihon” ha estado viajando mucho últimamente. Y por suerte, por una muy buena causa. Se ha expuesto en el Salon del Comic y en el Expomanga de Madrid, y después de haber vendido el original a través del proyecto TBO4Japan, me han confirmado que estará incluída en el recopilatorio que se publicará en breve a traves de Dibbuks, así como en el libro Magnitude 9 que sacará CFSL en Francia y en la revista Destination Tokyo de Japón. ¡Espero que ayude a levantar la moral de la gente!

No obstante, para los que quieran tener una copia y seguir ayudando, qué tiene más sentido que recibir el dibujo en una postal... desde Japón? Podeis escribirme hasta el 11 de Junio para saber los detalles (De los 2 Euros que costara cada una, la mitad ira destinada a la Cruz Roja de Japón). ¿Alguien se apunta a hacer una buena obra?

I survived to the Comitia 96 convention!
I'm very thankful to all those who came by our stand yesterday. It’s in many ways thanks to Micko (main character of the comic) that we were able to show the work to plenty of people and have lots of fun, as well as to Est Em’s patience (you’re awesome!).
I'm sincerely thankful to all those who have supported me in this crazy project: I’d have never been able to come this far without you!

The Secret Mobile Home will finally do its third stop as expected in the 96th Comitia festival in Tokyo on the 5th of may. It's a real honor to be part of one of the best fairs in Japan for original self-publication.

It is for this ocassion that I'm releasing "Spicy Tuna", a comic that I'll showcase along with its main character. It's the result of almost a year of work, so I sincerely hope you like it.

I'll also have postcards for sale (including one you already know for the Red Cross funds) and I'll do comissions if anyone asks.

El jueves 5 de mayo haré finalmente tal y como previsto tercera parada de la gira mundial en el Comitia 96 en Tokyo. Es todo un honor poder estar en una de las ferias de referencia en Japón para la creación original en materia de autoedición.

Para la ocasión sacaré un comic titulado "Spicy Tuna", que presentaré acompañado de su protagonista. Es el fruto de casi un año de trabajo, así que espero que os guste.

También tendré postales a la venta (en concreto una que ya conocéis para recabar fondos para la Cruz Roja) y haré dibujos si alguien me lo pide.

No dejéis de pasar a decir konnichiwa, al stand número Y31b, donde estaré acompañado de la increíble Est Em.

５/５(木)予定通り「秘密の隠れ家」ワールドツアーで東京に行われるコミティア９６にブースをだす事にしました。日本でオリジナル同人誌のこのイベントに参加する事ができて本当に幸いです。

「すぱいしーツナ」という漫画を出す予定です(主人公のミッコさんも現れると聞きました！)。ほとんど一年間もかけて描いた物なので、皆さんから意見を待ってます。宜しくお願いたします。

ZERO MAKES TREK ACROSS THE ATLANTIC
ZERO: JM KEN NIIMURA ILLUSTRATIONS ’07-’09 Set to Make Stateside Debut with Image Comics on April 27th

Image Comics is proud to present a collection of whimsical, colorful illustrations by JM Ken Niimura. The esteemed artist's gestural, emotionally affective work with writer Joe Kelly on the critically acclaimed miniseries I KILL GIANTS helped ensure that book was nominated for an Eisner award in 2009, won IGN's Best Indy Book of 2008, and was listed as one of the Top 10 YA Library Association picks of 2010. Niimura's work did not start nor stop with I KILL GIANTS, though.

Prior to his collaboration with Kelly, Niimura worked on a variety of international titles, including UNDERGROUND LOVE, CLOCKWORLD, VACIO ABSOLUTO, and OSTRAS JUALAS. The Spanish-born Niimura has won more than 30 awards in recognition for his art in his home country, showcased his work in exhibitions all across Madrid, and worked on advertising campaigns for clients like Cartoon Network.

"I'm really happy to share these illustrations I did during the period I worked on I KILL GIANTS with American readers," said Niimura. "They show the other aspect of my career -- that of an illustrator, dealing more solely with composition and color, and I'm really looking forward to hearing people's reaction to the book's design!"

In january of this year I came to Montréal to stay for some months.

En Enero de este año llegué a Montréal para quedarme durante unos meses.

Although it wasn’t my first time here, life in the American continent is something as exotic as familiar. As for its winter, you can say it’s almost apocalyptical, especially when you come from the south of Europe: going outside under infinite layers of clothing, knowing that it won’t even allow you to stay outdoors for a long time, makes one wonder if there’s life beyond a snow storm or how long one can survive without going out of home.

I comforted myself thinking that if astronauts face similar doubts when they are in a space station, I could certainly overcome my fears.

Aunque no era la primera vez que venía, la vida en el continente americano es algo tan exótico como familiar. En cuanto a su invierno, tiene tintes casi apocalípticos, sobre todo cuando se viene del sur de Europa: salir a la calle enfundado en infinitas capas de ropa a sabiendas de que ni así se puede estar en la calle por mucho tiempo, invita a preguntarse si hay vida más allá de una tormenta de nieve o cuántos días se puede sobrevivir sin salir de casa.

Me consolaba pensando que si los astronautas se enfrentan a cuestiones similares en una estación espacial, yo también podría superar mis miedos.

I decided to make a story that would be at the same time a portrait of my life in Montréal, as well as a personal therapy masked under a sci-fi setting.

The challenge would be to create 2 pages per week, based in a fixed structure, in order to improvise through time. If we live without knowing what fate has in store for us, why not doing the same with a script? Nothing more stimulating than jumping into unknown lands without knowing how the story would end (an attitude many link to the fool and ignorant, quite rightly).

After finding the title "514H" (referred to Montréal's dialing code plus its postal code's first letter), the die was cast. The most difficult task lied ahead: keeping up the rhythm.

Decidí hacer una historia que fuera a la vez un buen reflejo de mi vida en Montréal y a la vez que una terapia personal en clave fantástica.

El reto sería hacer dos páginas de cómic por semana en base a una estructura fija, para poder improvisar a medida que fuera pasando el tiempo. ¿Si vivimos sin saber qué nos depara el futuro realmente, por qué no hacer lo mismo con un guión? Nada más estimulante que el lanzarse a la aventura sin saber cómo se va a acabar (actitud que muchos asocian a los necios e ignorantes, no sin razón).

Después de encontrar el título "514H" (se refiere al prefijo telefónico de Montréal y la letra de su código postal), la suerte estaba echada. Ahora quedaba lo más difícil, mantener el ritmo.

I've intermingled small stories of my daily life, as well as using places I've often been to, plus some references to the local customs and culture.

There you have some nice nods to Bonhomme Carnaval (character for the Québec Carnival), to the Madrid Restaurant (a must in your way between Montréal and Québec), to its sci-fi olympic stadium or to the delicious restaurant Fameux (and its urinary), that has been like a second home for me.

I've also included friends I've crossed paths with during these months, I hope they'll forgive me for using them in such an irrespectful way... Thanks a lot to all of them, especially to Sophie for her help, advices and patience.

En la historia he ido entremezclando cosas que me sucedían en el día a día, utilizando lugares que he frecuentado, así como pequeñas referencias a elementos de la cultura local.

Ahí quedan algunos bellos guiños a Bonhomme Carnaval (mascota del carnaval de Québec), al carismático restaurante Madrid (parada imprescindible a medio camino entre Montréal y Québec), a ese estadio olímpico propio de una película de ciencia ficción, o al delicioso restaurante Fameux (y su urinario) que ha sido como una segunda casa para mi.

También he incluído a amigos con quienes me he ido cruzando en estos meses, espero que sepan perdonarme por utilizarlos de manera tan irrespetuosa… Muchas gracias a todos ellos y en especial a Sophie, por su ayuda, consejos y paciencia.

Just like Agent H, this period living in the country as well as the creating the webcomic has allowed me to understand better the place, its culture and people and all its positive things.

It's been a pleasure sharing with you all this story, almost a live intervention, with its highs and lows. Thanks a lot to all of you who have encouraged this project through your websites, blogs, twitter, or simply by writing comments.

I still think that limiting its life is an excellent idea: in our digitalized world, where everything seems available anytime, it's good to remind that not everything lasts forever... (That's a deep message, please take some time to think about it!)

I survived to the MoCCA Festival, undoubtely the finest comic festival I've ever been to. Nothing but great authors, lots of love for books and the comic/illustration medium, plus a shared interest for one another's works without any kind of boundaries: the essence of what comic festivals once were.

I had some very nice and talented neighbours and I discovered some incredible artist's work: Alabaster, Dave Roman and the awesome The Anthology Project, just to name a few. I've also put links to some awesome webcomics I discovered through the 514H website, don't forget to check them!

The MoCCA Festival was also a great place where to talk to all those who came by my booth, I'll never get tired of thanking you all for the support. And a big "hello" to David Lafuente, Emma Ríos and Pepe Larraz, as all of this is their fault!

I also had the chance to attend along with Joe Kelly to a meeting of the reading club in the Comic Book Jones bookshop in Staten Island, which featured our beloved "I Kill Giants". Once again, a priceless moment to chat and share thoughts with readers. How great can that be?

He sobrevivido al MoCCA Festival, sin duda el mejor salón de comic al que he ido jamás. Lleno de grandes artistas, un profundo amor por los libros, el cómic y la ilustración, así como un interés mútuo por el trabajo de los demás sin barreras de ningún tipo: la esencia de lo que los salones de cómic fueron tiempo ha.

Tuve la suerte de tener unos vecinos muy majos y con mucho talento, además de poder descubrir el trabajo de otros tantos dibujantes: Alabaster, Dave Roman y el increíble The Anthology Project, por mencionar unos pocos. He añadido también unos links a webcomics interesantes desde la web de 514H, no dejéis de echarles un ojo.

El MoCCA Festival ha sido también un lugar idóneo para charlar con todos los que se acercaron por mi stand, no me cansaré de agradeceros vuestro apoyo. Y no me olvido de saludar a David Lafuente, Emma Ríos y Pepe Larraz, que en el fondo tienen la culpa de todo esto!

También asistí junto a Joe Kelly a una reunión del club de lectura de la librería Comic Book Jones en Staten Island, a propósito de nuestro querido "Soy una matagigantes". De nuevo, fue un interesante intercambio de impresiones e ideas con los lectores.

Now onto something completely different: I've been recently interviewed for The Comic Archive on my inking work (mind my accent...), as well as having a nice review in the recent Wizard World magazine on my visit to Toronto, and another interview for the London-based spanish speaking magazine Ventana Latina.

The Secret Mobile Home moves with its warehouse full of books to the MoCCA Festival in New York (9th and 10th of april), specialized in self-publishing and independent comics. I’ll be in the A24 booth, saying hi, signing and doing comissions. Bsides having some prints (including a new print run of “Ganbare Nihon”), I’ll have some “I Kill Giants” hard covers and trade paperbacks. Unfortunately, I won't have the first copies of the Image Comics edition of “Zero”, as its release has been delayed until the beginning of may. See you there!

The french webcomic "Les Autres Gens" is celebrating its first year with no bounds: not only the publisher Dupuis will start a monthly publication, but there'll also be an exhibition with original art and illustrations inspired in its universe. I've drawn for this ocassion an illustration called "Le final boss" drawn from the chapters I drew last year with writer Kris, that will be for sale at a price of 250€.

You can see the exhibition from the 12th of march to the 2nd of april in the Gallerie des Arts Graphiques (4, rue Dante) in Paris.

I can't help but feel very, very small next to people like Bastien Vivès, Manuele Fior, Alexandre Franc or Erwann Surcouf...

I'm back from the Toronto Wizard Convention, after some 3 quite intense days. It's been my very first time running my own booth, so I'm really thankful to the organization and people who helped me to make everything easier and fun. Thanks a lot too to all of you who came to chat and show their interest in my work.

Esto de vuelta de la Toronto Wizard Convention, han sido 3 días muy intensos. Es la primera vez que tenía un stand propio en una feria, así que agradezco a la organización y participantes por ayudarme a que todo fuera sencillo y divertido. Muchas gracias también a todos los que pasasteis a charlar e interesarse por mi trabajo.

I sold all of the book I brought, as well as a nice part of the prints (the one I did for the Japan Red Cross was hopefully sold out) and some comissioned work I did on the spot. In a moment of free time I had, I did this Barbara big drawing, just for the sake of it!

Vendí todos los libros que llevé, una buena parte de láminas (de la de Japón por suerte vendí todas) e incluso algunos dibujos originales que hice allí mismo. En un rato libre, hice este de Bárbara en grande, por el placer de dibujar.

I also had the chance of meeeting the fellow Eisner nominee Troy Little, as well as discovering the publications of the incredible Ethan Rilly, Jason Kieffer, Nick Maandag and Eric Vedder. More than enough to go back home willing to do my best from now on...

[HMHWT 2011] Toronto Wizard Convention

All is set for the first stop of the Hidden Mobile Home: the upcoming Toronto Wizard Convention, where I’ll be from the 18th to the 20th of march. It’s my very first time having a booth in a convention like this, so I’m quite nervous and looking forward to seeing what it's like.

There’ll be “I Kill Giants” book’s on sale, as well as prints of my illustrations. I’ll also be doing comissioned work on the spot (with prices ranging from 25 to 200 canadian dollars depending on the size and complexity). If anyone’s interested in buying original artwork, please let me know and I’ll tell you about its availability and price.

I’ve contributed with the story “Dama, elfo y mercenario” (Dame, elf and mercenary), which Victor has been kind enough to write adding a nice japanese spice to it.

A shared sketchbook with some friends has marked a turning point in my habits, that at last include sketching live. Simply as healthy as exercising daily.
The Dibujo Madrid drawing sessions in La Tabacalera, as well as the cafes and my studio have become my second home lately.
Although I still feel kind of stiff, I'm positive the best is yet to come!

Un cahier d’esquisses partagé avec quelques potes a marqué un tournant dans mes habitudes, qui incluent désormais des croquis d’après nature. Aussi bon pour la santé que le sport, quoi.

Una libreta de bocetos compartida ha marcado un punto de inflexión en mis hábitos, que por fin incluyen los bocetos del natural. Tan sano como hacer deporte todos los días, vaya.
Las sesiones de Dibujo Madrid en la Tabacalera, así como los cafés y mi estudio han sido mi segundo hogar en estos últimos meses.
Aunque me noto un tanto agarrotado aún, estoy convencido de que lo mejor está aún por llegar.

With the end of the year around the corner, I’ve just realized I had a bunch of interviews that had appeared during the last months of which I had forgotten to speak about in the blog (unfortunately, most of them are in Spanish)...

Don’t miss the opportunity to hear me bray in the On Madrid magazine (photo), in the online magazine Tebeosfera, with a special issue on young Spanish authors as well as an article on my work, in Bilbao's Aux Magazine on my participation in the Getxo Comic Convention, and in the Rock & Comics radio show where I was invited last week.

If this weren’t enough, my visit to Lucca had several consequences: two videos of my pitiful participation in the Showcase, as well as this other where I literally destroy the XL magazine’s cover, not to forget this interview in the Italian website Comicus (this one can be found in English here).

Just to heal those battered eyes, here’s a peek at one of the workshops I’ve used during this year (Where could that be?)

Avec la fin de l’année qui aproche, je me suis rendu compte de toutes les interviews qui ont apparu pendant les derniers mois dont je n’ai pas parlé sur le blog (elles sont pour la plupart en espagnol, malheuseusement)…

Ne ratez pas l’opportunité de m’entendre braire dans On Madrid, supplement madrilène du journal El País (photo), dans la révue online Tebeosfera, qui a un numéro especial consacré aux jeunes auteurs espagnols en plus d'un article sur mon travail, dans la révue Aux Magazine de Bilbao, au fil de ma participation dans la Foire BD de Getxo, et dans l’emission radio Rock & Comics où j’ai été invité la semaine passé.

Au cas où ceci n’était pas assez, la visite a Lucca a eu quelques consequences : deux vidéos avec ma minable participation au Showcase, ainsi comme cet autre-ci où je détruis literallement la couverture de la révue XL et cette autre interview dans le site italien Comicus (celle-ci est aussi en anglais ici).

Con el fin de año a la vuelta de la esquina, me doy cuenta de que se me han acumulado una serie de entrevistas que han ido apareciendo en los últimos meses y que no había incluido en el blog…

No os perdáis la oportunidad de oírme rebuznar en On Madrid, suplemento madrileño del diario El País (es la foto de arriba), en la revista online Tebeosfera, que tiene un dossier especial dedicado a los autores nacidos tras la transición junto a un artículo sobre mi trabajo, en la revista Aux Magazine de Bilbao, que me entrevistó al hilo del Salón del Cómic de Getxo, y en el programa de radio Rock & Comics en el que estuve invitado la semana pasada.

Por si esto no fuera poco, la visita a Lucca dejó tras de si varias secuelas: dos vídeos de mi lamentable participación en el Showcase, así como este otro destrozando la portada de la revista XL y esta otra entrevista en la web italiana Comicus.

I recently did this illustration for the Vila Viniteca winery.
My friend Alfonso says that its not too accurate suggesting that wine's plain grapes' juice. And I should add he's quite right!

Expocomic (Madrid's Comic Convention) is held this weekend, I'll be there signing in Norma Editorial's booth, on friday 10th from 5.30 pm to 7 pm. I'm the guy with a hungry face behind the booth.

J'ai fait récemment cette illustration pour la cave Vila Viniteca.
Mon ami Alfonso m'a dit que suggérer que le vin n'est que du jus de raisins n'est pas trop réaliste. Et j'ajoute qu'il a quand même raison...

Coté évenements, je serai ce weekend au Expocomic (la Foire BD de Madrid) en dédicace sur le stand de Norma Editorial le vendredi 10 de 17h30 à 19h. Je suis le type à l'air affamé derrière le stand.

The Getxo Comic and Manga Convention is undoubtely an essential event for me (if only because that's where Joe and I met).
This year I'll be there doubly (or triply), as besides having done its poster, I'll also present an exhibition. Under the name "Work in progress", I've put some of the works I've been involved in during 2010, both published and unpublished. I'll also publish the short story "Do cowherds dream of electric cow?" in "El Balanzín" magazine, which you can find for free in the convention, and of which you can see its first page below. As for my activities on the spot, I'll be there during saturday 27th, signing at 1 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., as well as joining a talk at 13:45 p.m. moderated by the allmighty Borja Crespo.

La Foire de la BD et du Manga de Getxo est déjà pour moi un rendez-vous inmancable (si ce n'est que parce que c'était là que j'ai rencontré Joe Kelly).
Cette année j'y serai à nombreuses reprises, puisque à part avoir fait son affiche, j'aurai aussi une expo. Entitulé "Work in progress", j'y montrerai quelques uns des projets sur lesquels j'ai travaillé pendant 2010, certains déjà publiés, d'autres encore inedits. Je publierai aussi l'histoire courte "Les bergers rêvent-ils de vaches électriques ?" dans la révue "El Balanzín", qui est distribué gratuitement durant la foire avec l'entrée et dont vous pouvez voir une planche ci-dessous. Concernant mes activités sur place, je serai là bas tout le samedi 27 : je dédicacerai à 13h et à 18h30, et je partiperai sur une rencontre avec le public à 13h45, presenté par le tout pouissant Borja Crespo.

El Salón del Cómic y del Manga de Getxo es ya una cita ineludible en mi agenda (aunque solo sea porque allí es donde Joe y yo nos conocimos).
Este año estaré por partida doble (o triple), ya que además de haber hecho el cartel, también tendré una exposición. Amazing! | ¡Increíble!

Issue #647 of "The Amazing Spiderman" came out last week in the US, marking the end of the "Brand New Day" saga. Thanks to its editors Tom and Stephen, I've been lucky enough to work on a 5-page short story written by Joe Kelly in which I did everything from the pencilling to the lettering. As last time, here's a short "making of" to show you an insight of its creation.

Le numéro 647 de "The Amazing Spiderman" est sorti la semaine passé aux US, et marque la fin de la saga du "Brand New Day". Grace à ses éditeurs Tom et Stephen j'ai eu la chance de pouvoir travailler sur une histoire courte de 5 pages écrite par Joe Kelly dont jài fait du crayonnage au lettrage. Comme la dernière fois, je profite pour faire un petit "making of" pour vous donner une idée du travail qu'on a fait.

La semana pasada salió a la venta el número 647 de "The Amazing Spiderman" en los Estados Unidos, poniendo punto y final a la saga "Brand New Day". Gracias a sus editores Tom y Stephen, he tenido la suerte de trabajar en una historia corta de 5 páginas escrita por Joe Kelly, de la que me he encargado desde el lápiz al rotulado. Como en la ocasión anterior, hago un breve "making of" para daros una idea del trabajo.

Step 1: Following Joe's script, I did quick black and white breakdowns, imagining at the same time where and how to put the colors. Altough they were only 5 pages, they had quite a lot of dialogues, so it took me some time to find a nice way to put everything while keeping a good reading rhythm.

1er pas : J'ai fait un storyboard en noir et blanc à partir du scenario de Joe, mais j'essaye de tenir déjà en compte où et comment je mettrai la couleur. Même si ce n'était que 5 planches, il y avait pas mal de dialogue, donc ça m'a pris un bon moment pour trouver la façon de tout mettre en respectant un bon rythme de lecture.

Paso 1: Siguiendo el guión de Joe, hice un storyboard en blanco y negro, teniendo ya en mente dónde y cómo pondría el color. Aunque solo eran 5 páginas, tenían bastante texto, así que me llevó su tiempo poder condensar el conjunto y darle el ritmo adecuado de lectura.

Step 2: I drew and inked the pages, which allowed me to save some time, as my pencilling's rather chaotic. It was my first time using Marvel's paper, so being a bigger format as the one I usually use, I included more details in the drawings. I also drew the pannel borders (that's something I used to do with Photoshop) to have a clear idea of each page's structure.

2ème pas : J'ai dessiné et encré les pages, ce qui m'a épargné un peu de temps, car mon crayonnage est assez chaotique. C'était ma première fois avec le papier de Marvel, donc étant un format plus grand, j'ai inclus plus de détails sur les dessins. J¡ai aussi dessiné les bords des cases (ce que je faisais avec Photoshop d'habbitude) pour avoir une idée claire de la stucture de la page.

Paso 2: Dibujé y entinté las páginas, lo que me ahorra bastante tiempo, porque mi dibujo a lápiz es muy sucio. Era la primera vez que usaba el papel de Marvel, así que al trabajar en un formato mayor al habitual para mi, añadí más detalles en el dibujo. También he integrado los bordes de las viñetas en el dibujo (solía hacerlos con Photoshop) para tener una idea clara de la estructura de cada página.

Step 3: Once the drawings were scanned and retouched, I put some first colors working on all 5 at the same time to have an overview on the whole. It's the moment where I can calculate the color scheme and rework the reading using chromatic contrasts. One other advantage is that I can handle some elements relying exclusively on the color rather than on the raw drawing to make each pannel more expressive.

3ème pas : Une fois les dessins scannés et retouchés, j'ai ajouté les premières taches de couleurs, travaillant les 5 au même temps pour avoir uné idée de l'ensemble. C'est le moment où je peux calculer la palette chromatique et retravailler la lecture à l'aide des contrastes chromatiques. Une autre avantage c'est que je peux gèrer certains elements seulement avec de la couleur plutôt qu'avec le dessin pur, ce qui fait certaines cases plus expressives.

Paso 3: Una vez escaneado y retocado el dibujo, comencé a plantear las primeras manchas de color en las páginas, trabajando todas al mismo tiempo. Es el momento de encontrar la paleta de color y retrabajar la lectura aprovechando el contraste cromático. Otra ventaja de hacer el proceso completo es que me permite encontrar soluciones con el color que no indico con el dibujo, lo que le da más variedad a las viñetas.

Step 4: This is when I finished coloring, possibly one of the most boring steps, but also very exciting, as this is where I start seeing what the pages will finally be like.

4ème pas : C'est le moment où je termine le coloriage, probablement l'un des pas le plus ennuyants... mais aussi très excitant, car c'est enfin là que je vois ce que les pages seront finallement.

///

Paso 4: Aquí es cuando acabé el color, probablemente el paso más tedioso... pero también emocionante, porque es donde puedo ver por fin lo que dan de si las páginas.

Step 5: The last step were lettering and retouches. Although I already thought of their placement, lettering is a very delicate step, as it can completely modify the reading. Some pannels were also slightly modified once the balloon added, whether because some elements were hidden by the text or because by adding the text balloons and therefor having more white tones to the pages, some images needed more relief. Done!

5ème pas : Le dernier pas étaient le lettrage et les retouches. Même si j'avais déjà pensé leur emplacement, le lettrage est un pas très delicat, parce que ça peut modifier completement la lecture. Certaines cases ont été legèrement modifiés une fois la bulle ajoutée, soit parce qu'elles cachaient certains elements, soit parce que une fois ajoutées les bulles, les planches sont un peu plus blanches et donc ont besoin d'un certain relief en plus. Finni !

Paso 5: El último paso fueron la rotulación y los retoques. Aunque ya estaban calculados, el rotulado es una fase delicada porque puede modificar completamente la lectura. Algunos dibujos están también retocados una vez que añado los bocadillos, bien porque algún elemento importante se tape con ellos o bien porque al añadirlos y darle un toque blanco a las páginas, algunas imágenes necesitan algo más de relieve. ¡Acabado!

Next sunday (17th of October) I'll be in Mostra Comic in Valencia.
I'll participate through an intensive manga workshop, an introduction to the japanese working method and its market. We'll also work on a practical exercise in which we'll emphasyze the pre-production work of a comic page, especially its storytelling through the storyboard. The workshop will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., those interested can book it through its website.

Le prochain 17 d'octobre je serai à la Mostra Comic de Valencia.
Je participerai avec un atelier intensif de manga, une introduction à la méthode japonaise de travail et leur marché. On fera aussi un exercise pratique qui favorisera le travail de pre-production d'une planche BD et surtout la narrativité avec le storyboard. El próximo 17 de Octubre estaré en el Mostra Comic en Valencia.
Participaré con un taller sobre manga, una aproximación a la mecánica de trabajo japonesa y a su mercado. También haremos un trabajo práctico con el que haremos hincapié en el trabajo de preproducción de una página de cómic y sobre todo en la narrativa sirviéndonos del storyboard. The National Museum of Decorative Arts in Madrid (C/ Montalbán, 12) will wrap up this weekend their recent exhibition "Fascinated by the East".
They have published the fanzine "Ink Tsunami", distributed for free in the museum and in which I have published the short story "Spanish sailors around the world".
On sunday september the 3rd I'll be along with other fellow artists from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. drawing live in the museum, followed by a talk show.

Para la ocasión han publicado el fanzine "Ink Tsunami", distribuído gratuítamente en el museo y en el que he publicado la historia corta "Navegantes por el mundo".

It's the 15th anniversary of Joker bookshops in Bilbao. To celebrate this they've commanded a series of advertisements like this one that could be seen in "Dolmen" magazine last month. It is also a tribute to Herriman's "Kraz Kat", which coincidentally celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2010. Here's a brief step-by-step of this image.

Wazuka is a town between Kyoto and Nara, full of tea fields. Last weekend was the 10th anniversary of the workcamp that takes place there every summer, in which I participated for 2 years. It might sound a bit cliché, but it was one of the most enrichening experiences I can recall: sharing 2 weeks with interesting and nice people, doing volunteer work and learning so many things about the tea culture... to the point that my favourite tea is undoubtely "Wazuka-cha"! I couldn't be there this time, but I hope it doesn't take me long to go back there again...

Wazuka est une ville entre Kyoto et Nara avec abondants champs de thé. Le dernier weekend était le 10 anniversaire du chantier qui y a lieu tous les étés, et où j'ai participé pendant 2 années. Ça peut sonner un peu cliché, mais c'était l'une des experiences les plus enrichissantes dont je me rappelle : partager 2 semaines avec des gens interessantes et sympas, faire du volontariat et apprendre sur la culture thé... au point que maintenant je ne rêve que de leur "Wazuka-cha" ! Je n'ai pas pu y etre cette fois, mais j'espère que bientôt...

El fin de semana pasado se celebró el 10 aniversario del campo de trabajo que se organiza todos los veranos, en el que participé durante dos años. Es un topicazo, pero fue una de las experiencias más enriquecedoras que recuerdo: compartir dos semanas con gente interesante y simpática, haciendo trabajo de voluntariado y aprendiendo muchas cosas sobre la cultura del té... hasta el punto de que ahora mi preferido es sin dudarlo el "Wazuka-cha". No pude estar allí esta vez, pero espero no tadar mucho en volver...

和束とは京都と奈良の間にある茶畑の多い町です。夏に行われるワークキャンプに二回参加して、先週はあのワークキャンプの１０年記念パーティでした。二週間の間、いい人とボランティア活動をしながら、お茶の文化を学んで・・・当たり前すぎるかもしれないですが、今でも忘れられない経験です。今でも「お茶」と言えば、僕には「和束茶」が一番です！今回は行けなくて残念でしたけど、また近いうちに・・・

I've been resting for several days to recover from San Diego, it's not for nothing the biggest US Comic-Con!
Thanks so much for all those who came to the signing sessions or to Man of Action's booth for their support. As you may know we didn't get the Eisner, although Joe and I hope to do our best with the upcoming "Immortal Sgt" (no fixed release yet... Stay tuned).
And here's an ilustration that was included in the "San Diego Comic-Con yearboook 2010" by Image Comics.
The biggest news though are that it's at last holiday-time, yay!

I'm preparing my baggage for the San Diego Comicon, excited as one can only be right before a trip! I'll pack this recent article on the Neon Monster website, as well as the interview that will appear in the "On Madrid" magazine of spanish newspaper "El País" this friday, just to show off. I shouldn't forget the pen and pencil for the signing sessions I'll do along with Joe Kelly at Image Comics' booth (#2729) on friday 23rd 12:00 - 1:00 p.m and saturday 24th 10:00 - 11:00 a.m... And why not a nice suit to look nice on friday night? You'll find me the first in the row to go into the Indigo Room of the Hilton San Diego Bayfront hotel at 8:30 p.m., for the Eisner Award ceremony. Unlike promised, no speech prepared... In the meantime, here's a recent illustration for Éditions Didier's spanish textbook "Nuevas voces 2", on a text by Andrés Neuman, only for your eyes!
Now the big question: should I bring something else?

Et pourquoi pas un costume pour avoir l'air elegant le vendredi soir ? Contrairement à ce que je pensais, je n'ai pas de discours preparé... No debería de olvidar mis lápices y rotuladores para las sesiones de firmas que haré con Joe Kelly en el stand de Image comics (número 2729) el viernes 23 de 12 del mediodía a la 1 de la tarde y el sábado 24 de 10 a 11 de la mañana. ¿Y por qué no algo de ropa elegante para el viernes noche? During the week of the 12th to the 16th of july I'll collaboorate with the french digital serial comic "Les autres gens" along with writer Kris. It'll be 4 chapters in the first spin-off of the series, retracing a youth episode of the main characters.

I'll be on the 27th of this month opening in Madrid the exhibition "Images of the floating world" at the Studio Banana (c/ Plátano 14, metro Valdeacederas or Ventillas). The recently finished Kuala Lumpur Design Week 2010 featured this year “Japan young Illustrators”, an exhibition showing (as you might have imagined) works by young japanese illustrators. I’ve been part of it with this illustration, as well as the one featured on top of this post, that I had originally created for the stationery brand Canson. The exhibition’s was at the National Art Gallery... and I’d have liked so much to be there! When will we have teleportation gates, when?

La récemment finnie Kuala Lumpur Design Week 2010 a présenté cette année l’exposition “Japan Young Illustrators”, qui montre (comme son nom indique) les travaux des jeunes illustrateurs japonais. J’y ai participé avec cette illustration ainsi que celle qui est au-dessus de ces lignes, que j’ai fait pour la marque Canson. L’exposition était au National Art Gallery... et j’aurais tellement aimé y être ! Je reclame des portails de téléportation tout suite !

I'm heading to the Barcelona Comic Convention, the Mecca of comics!
On Thursday 6th I’ll be at 6:30 pm in the Euskomic booth presenting the poster for the 9th Getxo Comic and Manga Convention, which I’ll post as soon as the convention’s over. The release of “Zero” will be accompained of signing sessions at Norma Editorial’s booth on Friday 7th from 6pm to 7:30 pm and on Saturday 8th from 12:30 pm to 2pm. Holland is this year’s invited country, featuring the exhibition “I”, on the autobiography in comics, in which I’ve participated with a 4-pages short story. And if all goes as expected, the 21st issue of the magazine “Dos veces breve” will be out containing the Spanish version of “Shooting-a-star”. Better still: I have minicomics for all those of you who come to say hello, don’t be shy!

Me voici sur le chemin pour la Foire de la BD de Barcelone, ô Mecque de la BD !
Le jeudi 6 je serai à 18h30 sur le stand de Euskomic pour presenter l’affiche de la 9ème Foire de la BD de Getxo, que j’afficherai ici aussitôt comme la foire sera finnie. Puis, pour promouvoir la sortie de « Zero », je serai en dédicace sur le stand de Norma Editorial le vendredi 7 de 18h à 19h30 et le samedi 8 de 12h30 à 14h. L’Hollande est cette annèe le pays invité du Salon, et ils montreront sur leur stand l’expo « Moi », sur l’autobiographie en BD, où j’ai participé avec une histoire courte de 4 planches. Et si tout va bien, il y aura aussi le numéro 21 de la révue « Dos veces breve », avec la version en espagnol de « Shooting-a-star ». Mieux encore : j'ai des minicomics pour tous ceux qui passeront me dire bonjour, ne soyez pas timides !

¡Estoy de camino al Salón del Cómic de Barcelona, oh Meca del cómic!
El jueves 6 estaré a las 18:30 en el stand de Euskomic para presentar el cartel del IX Salón del Cómic y del Manga de Gexto, que postearé tan pronto como acabe el Salón. Coincidiendo con la salida de “Zero”, estaré también firmando en el stand de Norma Editorial: el viernes 7 de 18:00 a 19:30 y el sábado 8 de 12:30 a 14:00. Holanda es este año el país invitado, en su stand se mostrará “Yo”, exposición sobre la autobiografía en el cómic, en la que he participado con una historia corta de 4 páginas. Y si todo va bien, también estará disponible el número 21 de la revista "Dos veces breve" con la versión en español de "Una estrella fugaz". ¡Aún mejor: tengo minicomics para todo aquel que se pase a decir hola, no seáis tímidos!

"Zero" is the title of the upcoming book that will be on sale in may for the Barcelona Comic Convention, through Norma Editorial. Its not a new comic, but a book that compiles some of the illustrations I've done during the last 3 years, in a numbered and signed edition. You've seen some of them on the blog, others were comissioned work for publicity, book covers or posters, and the whole set is a panorama of the styles and ideas I've been into lately. This time, there's no excuse, I need a suit right now: the list of nominees for the 2010 Eisner Awards was announced last week and "I Kill Giants" was selected for the Best Publication for Teens. I shouldn't forget to prepare a speech, where I could thank Joe for his dedication to the project, his great ideas and for giving such an opportunity to a newcomer like me. I should also thank to my family and friends for their support, and if time allowed me to, I'd like to finish by mentioning all the publishers and those who have helped me during the past years. But I don't care if I buy a tuxedo, an italian suit or an andalusian outfit, what I know is how I want to begin the speech: "Dear neighbours of Villar del Río..."

Cette fois-ci, ça ne peux plus attendre longtemps, j'ai bésoin d'un costume tout suite : la liste oficielle de nominées aux Prix Eisner est sortie la semaine passé et "Je tue des géants" a été selectionné dans la categorie de Meilleure Publication pour les Ados. Je ne dois pas oublier d'écrire un bon discours, où je mentionnerai à Joe, sa dedication, ses bonnes idées et lui remercier pour avoir donné une opportunité à un novice comme moi. Je devrais inclure à ma famille et amis pour leur soutien, et si le temps le permets j'amairais bien finnir par remercier les éditeurs et tous ceux qui m'ont encouragé au cours de ces dernières années. Mais peu importe que le costume soit un frac, un smoking ou andalou, ce que je sais c'est comment je veux commencer le texte : "Chers voisins de Villar del Río..."

Y que no se me olvide preparar un discurso, para poder mencionar a Joe, su dedicación, buenas ideas y por haberle dado una oportunidad a un novato como yo. No debería de olvidar agradecer su apoyo a mi familia y amigos, y si el tiempo lo permitiera me gustaría concluir con otras tantas menciones a editores y todos aquellos que me han ido ayudando y dando ánimos en estos últimos años. If there's something I especially enjoy of teaching is being out of my studio routine, sharing ideas, doodling, speaking about comics and films while eating some chips. These are the next opportunities to do so, especially reccomended for all those who want to learn to draw badly:

-Maison de la Culture du Japon à Paris, from the 6th to the 10th of July. With the sponsorship of ActuaBD, Canson, Carabas, Kana, Humanoïdes, Soleil and Tonkam. In french language.
We'll focus on the creative process of comic-making, while developing a short story. The MCJP course will also benefit of the participation of journalists, publishers and authors that will share their points of view through short lectures.

S'il y a quelque chose que j'aime bien du fait de donner de cours c'est sortir de ma routine d'atelier, partager des idées, gribouiller, parler de la BD et de films en mangeant des chips. Voici les prochaines ocassions pour le faire, conseillés à tous ceux qui veulent apprendre à dessiner mal :

On the other hand, here's an interview that the website Comic Vine did to some of the collaborators of the latest issue of "Popgun". I was also invited at the Buzón de Radio Japón of the NHK. This last one is in spanish and will only be available until the 4th of april, so be quick or you'll miss me braying!

What do comic authors speak about when they meet? It's simple: they talk about comics, mangas and bande desinées. Here's the transcription (spanish only, sorry) of a conversation I had with Taiyou Matsumoto and Issei Eifuku, authors of the breath-taking "Takemitsu Zamurai", in the past Barcelona Manga Convention. The impressive Marc Bernabé (to whom I'll bever be grateful enough) has translated and transcribed it , being kind enough to avoid the rattling noise of my legs shaking under the table.

Sur quoi parlent les auteurs de BD quand ils se rencontrent ? C'est simple : sur la BD, le manga et les comics. Voici la transcription d'une conversation (en espagnol seulement, desolé) que j'ai eu avec Taiyou Matsumoto et Issei Eifuku, auteurs de l'impressionant "Le samuraï Bambou", lors de la passée Foire du Manga de Barcelone. “Chasing the goldfish” is a short story I did last year for Kodansha’s magazine “Mandala” vol.3, my very first professional experience in the Japanese market, where I was backed by household names such as Go Nagai, Ana Juan or Igort. It’ll be published in english language in Image Comic’s “Popgun” magazine vol.4, on sale the 24th of February, although those of you who can’t wait for its release can read it for free in their official website.

Based in Singapur, the ASEF (Asia Europe Foundation) has as its main objective creating bonds between Asia and Europe at very different levels. Among their cultural projects there is "Lingua Comica", in which I participated back in 2007. The objective was creating a comic between two artists, one asian and the other european, through a blog and later together during a stay in London. I was lucky enough to work with korean artist Choi Juhyun in an improvised comic that worked as a communication tool: we decided not to write e-mails or letter and used the comic pages to introduce to each other and find common interests. This has been a very interesting project and so far my most successful collaboration work, not to mention the nice mood among the participants. here are the links to the specific pages in their publishing order:

La ASEF (Asia Europe Foundation) es una fundación con sede en Singapur cuyo objetivo es el crear vínculos entre Asia y Europa a muy diversos niveles. Dentro del marco de sus actividades culturales se encuentra el proyecto “Lingua Comica” en el que participé en el año 2007. El objetivo: crear un cómic entre dos artistas, uno asiático y uno europeo a través de un blog y más adelante en conjunto durante una estancia en conjunto. I wouldn't like to go on like a broken record, but here's a fresh piece of news about "I Kill giants", which has recently been chosen as one of the Top Ten Graphic Novels for Teens by the American Library Association! I'd also like to mention the discussion the comic shop Challengers in Chicago will hold on the 28th. Thanks a lot to them for organising this event!
Last but now least, I'll be in Angoulême Comic Festival to submit some projects, saying hello to the folks and having fun at the Hôtel Mercure. I'll also bring some minicomics in english I've done with the "Antipersonal Tale" short story, so if you see me, ask me for a copy! I already did last year a limited print in english and spanish of a short story called "Change your life", which had been published in the "Barsowia" fanzine and selected in the 24th Cornellá Comic Contest, and which you have below. We only have a few days left before 2009 ends, therefore it’s time to take stock of the year. I’m very proud to announce that “I Kill Giants” has been included in several “Best of 2009” lists: New York Magazine or Comic Book Resources have placed us among household names such as David Mazzucchelli, Emmanuel Guibert or Naoki Urasawa. A huge encouragement to keep working in 2010!
Barbara has certainly been a busy girl this year - after the end of the comic book serialization and the following TP edition in the US, there’s been a French edition through Quadrants in January and a Spanish one through Norma Editorial. I shouldn’t forget mentioning the Titan Edition that’s about to come out in the US, full of interesting extra contents and that’ll be available in two editions (regular and signed & numbered).
To continue with the Christmas spirit, I’ll give away a set of the 7 original “I Kill Giants” comic books signed. To participate in the draw, you only have to leave a comment saying what kind of contents you’d like to see here (your ideas will allow me to continue improving this blog!). Each comment will be numbered based on their arrival time. The deadline is the 5th of January and I’ll announce the winner in this blog on the 6th.

Il ne nous reste à peine que quelques jours avant la fin du 2009, le moment des bilans est arrivé. Es un honor anunciar que “Soy una matagigantes” ha sido escogido en varias listas de lo mejor del 2009: New York Magazine o Comic Book Resources nos han colocado junto a pesos pesados como David Mazzucchelli, Emmanuel Guibert o Naoki Urasawa. ¡Unos pocos ánimos para seguir esforzándome en el 2010!
Barbara ha estado muy ocupada este año, ya que además de terminarse su publicación en cómic book y su consiguiente versión recopilada en los Estados Unidos, ha salido en francés a través de Quadrants en Enero y en español de la mano de Norma Editorial en Junio. Por si fuera poco, está a punto de salir una versión en tapa dura en los EEUU, repleta de interesantes extras, en dos ediciones (normal o firmada y numerada).
Para continuar con el espíritu navideño, sortearé 1 lote con la primera edición de los 7 comic book americanos de “Soy una matagigantes” firmados. Soitu.es is a very interesting spanish news website which was active for almost 2 years. I collaborated with them since early 2008 in their "Vida urbana" ("Urban life") section, doing comic pages about life in Paris, speaking about little anecdotes, must-see places and generally all those things that aren't on a guide book... Although the website unfortunately closed down last october, the pages are still visible (in spanish only, though). Here's the index, if you feel like looking at them, and a little unpublished page!

Soitu.es es una interesantísima página web de noticias que estuvo activa durante casi cerca de dos años. Colaboré para ellos desde principios del 2008 realizando para su sección "Vida urbana" páginas de cómic sobre la vida en París, hablando de pequeñas anecdotas, sitios interesantes y en general de todas esas cosas que no se ven en las guías... Images of the floating world | Imágenes de un mundo flotante

"Pictures of the floating world" is a series of 25 digital prints that I did between 2007 and 2008. The origin of this project are the illustrations I did for Ediciones Valiente's free digital publication "Dr.V" (no longer downloadable). I drew then 4 more series based on the same concept, which have been shown in the FIAP in Paris (April 2008), in the Château de la Chesnaie de Beauchamp (May 2008), in the Epitanime Convention in París (June 2009) as well as in the exhibition I had this year in the Barcelona Manga Convention. They were also selected in the 2008 INJUVE Illustration Contest in Spain.

"Images du monde flottant" est une série de 25 gravures numériques que j'ai fait entre 2007 et 2008. À l'origine sont des illustrations que j'avais fait pour la publication gratuite de Ediciones Valientes "Dr.V" (qui n'est plus disponible). À partir de celles-ci, j'ai realisé 4 autres séries sur le même concept, dont l'ensemble a été exposé au FIAP à Paris (abril 2008), à la salle d'expositions du Château de la Chesnaie à Beauchamp (mai 2008), à l'Épitanime (june 2009) ainsi qu'à l'expo que j'ai eu à la Foire du Manga de Barcelone cette anéee. Elles ont aussi été selectionnées au concours Espagnol INJUVE dans sa modalité d'illustration en 2008.

"Imágenes de un mundo flotante" es una serie de 25 estampas digitales que hice entre el 2007 y 2008. El origen fueron unas ilustraciones que hice para la publicación gratuíta de Ediciones Valientes "Dr.V" (que ya no está disponible para descarga). A partir de ahí realicé 4 series más basándome en el mismo concepto, cuyo conjunto expuse en el FIAP de París (Abril del 2008), en la sala de exposiciones en el Château de la Chesnaie de Beauchamp (Mayo del 2008), en la Epitanime Convention de París (Junio del 2009) y algunas también en la exposición que tuve en el Salón del Manga de este año. Además, fueron seleccionadas en el Certámen INJUVE del 2008 en la modalidad de ilustración.

I've been nominated in the 1st ICC Comic Awards in the "story comics" category with a 8 pages story entitled "Shooting-a-star". Like an Oscar-award winner, I'd like to thank everyone who helped me with their comments, as I've been lately in great need of some support to trust in my own work. The spanish version will be published next year in the "Dos veces breve" magazine.

On the other hand, I'll be today in the Fessart Library in Paris (6, rue Fessart in the 19th arrondisement) participating in a lecture after a comic workshop I organised last month with deaf and hearing teenagers. An eye-opening experience that's proved that comic can be a great medium to create understanding between people. I'll be from 15pm to 16:30pm debating with the pupils and general public about comics, life and death. This intensive workshop is the latest I've done in parisian libraries, among which the Maurice Genevoix in october, Gouttes D'or in november, Mortier in november-december... It does me so good to be away from home from time to time!

J'ai été selectionné au 1st ICC Comic Awards dans la categorie "story comics" avec une historie courte de 8 planches entitré "Shooting-a-star". Tel qu'un ganant d'un prix Oscar, je voudrais remercier à tous ceux qui m'ont aidé et conseillé avec cette histoire, car dernièrement j'ai eu pas mal bésoin d'encouragements pour avoir de la confiance en mes propres histoires. La version en espagnol sera publiée l'année prochaine dans la revue "Dos veces breve".

Sinon, je vous attends cet après-midi à la Bilbiothèque Fessart à Paris (6, rue Fessart, 19ème) pour une rencontre au fil d'un atelier de BD pour les sourds et entendants que j'ai organisé le dernier mois. L'experience à été très interessante, comme quoi la BD est un bon moyen pour créer une comunication parmi les gens. Je serai de 15h à 16h30 en train de debatir avec les élèves et le public sur la BD, la vie et la mort. Cet atelier intensif est le dernier d'une serie que j'ai fait aux bibliothèques de Paris, comme à la Maurice Genevoix en octobre, la Gouttes D'or en novembre, la Mortier en novembre-decembre... Des fois, ça fais du bien de sortir de chez soi !

He sido seleccionado en el 1st ICC Comic Awards en el apartado "story comics" con una historia de 8 páginas titulada "Una estrella fugaz". Cual ganador de un premio Oscar, me gustaría agradecer mucho a todos los que me ayudaron y aconsejaron con este comic, que llega en un momento en el que me hacen falta pequeños empujones para confiar en mis propias historias. La versión en español se publicará el año que viene en la revista "Dos veces breve".

Por otro lado, os espero hoy en la Biblioteca Fessart de París (6, rue Fessart en el 19 arrondisement) participando en un encuentro al hilo de un taller de cómic para sordos y oyentes que he organizado este último mes. La experiencia ha sido muy satisfactoria y demuestra que los cómics pueden ser un inimitable vehículo de comunicación entre distintas personas. Estaré de 15h a 16:30 debatiendo con los alumnos y asistentes sobre el cómic, la vida y la muerte. Este taller intensivo es el último de los que he impartido diversas bibliotecas de París, como la Maurice Genevoix en Octubre, Gouttes D'or en Noviembre, en la Mortier en Noviembre-Diciembre... ¡A veces salir de casa es hasta bueno y todo!

Food for my ego | Alimentando mi ego

Today I'll be signing in La Ville Aux Livres, a comic convention in Créil (north of Paris). This is one more event to add to all those I've been to in the past months... and so that you don't think all I did all of this just for eating and bumming around, here are some articles that were published due to these visits. I participated in October in some lectures for highschools speaking about the comic artist's job in Normandy, a nice and different experience compared to my daily life. At the end of that same month I went to the Barcelona Manga Convention, where I did among others a masterclass in the Joso School's booth (there's a full coverage on the event in their website) as well as an exhibition which was included in the catalonian edition of the "El País" newspaper. I also have participated on some shows for TV3, though I'll skip them as I'm afraid I said quite a lot of stupid things (more than usual). And last but not least, the most incredible one: a website interview on my visit to Helskinki Comic Convention in September... in finnish, of course! Ahh, this artist life's going to kill me...

Je serai aujourd'hui en dédicace à La Ville Aux Livres, salon du livre et de la BD de Créil, en région de Picardie. Une autre foire à ajouter à toutes celles que j'ai visité au long de ces derniers mois... et pour que vous ne pensez pas que je n'ai fait que manger et glander, voici quelques articles qui ont apparu suite à ces visites. Au mois d'octobre j'ai fait en Normandie d'interventions pour des lycées parlant du métier de dessinateur BD, une experience bien sympa et differente par rapport à ce que je fais habituellement. À la fin de ce mois là, j'ai visité la Foire du Manga de Barcelone, où j'ai fait parmi d'autres un atelier au stand de l'École BD Joso (dont vous avez une chronique sur le site de l'école) ainsi qu'une expo qui a été commenté par l'édition catalane du journal "El País". J'ai aussi participé à quelques emissions sur TV3, mais je n'ose pas vous les montrer car j'ai du dire pas mal de bêtises (enfin, encore plus que d'habbitude). Et en tout dernier, le plus hallucinant: une interview sur un site parlant de ma visite à la Foire de la BD de Helsinki... en finlandais, bien sûr ! Aaah, qu'elle est dure, la vie d'artiste...

Hoy estaré firmando en La Ville Aux Livres, salón del cómic de Créil, al norte de París. Un salón más a añadir a todos los que he ido recorriendo en los últimos meses... y para que no tengáis la sensación de que solo voy para comer bien y hacer el vago, os pongo algunas reseñas que surgieron al hilo de estas visitas. En Octubre participé en unos talleres en Normandía explicando a institutos el trabajo del dibujante de cómic, una experiencia divertida y diferente en comparación a mi día a día. A finales de ese mes estuve en el Salón del Manga de Barcelona, donde di un taller de cómic en la Ecuela Joso (que está disponible en la web de la escuela) y tuve una exposición que fue reseñada por "El País" en su edición catalana. También participé en varios programas de TV3, pero esto me lo ahorro (porque creo que dije aún más chorradas de lo habitual). Y para acabar, el más alucinante de todos: una entrevista en una web sobre mi paso por el Salón del Cómic de Helsinki en Septiembre... en finés, claro! Ahhh, qué dura la vida del dibujante...
